yes, i am still here, and plan to keep writing..

but now is not a good time, and i’m not sure if the next few weeks will be any better!

thesis is OVERWHELMING..

well, “finish kolokium successfully” is in my 7th semester resolution, i’ll have to work harder to achieve that..

It is my last internship week in Jakarta, and my last 8 days before I fly back to Surabaya, my lovely but rather boring home after I experienced 3 months of life in Jakarta. This is new for me. I had lived in Jakarta, been to Jakarta countless of times, but never actually thought that living here would bring such excitements. And to live and make a living here? Never had it considered!

What makes me love Jakarta is its availability in everything! From those multinational companies that we’d love to work at to tasting the traditional food from Indonesia’s finest ingredients, from watching the latest exhibition in design and technology to visiting museums of our ancient history, they’re all available here. Just name it, and a good guide should be able to show u where it is! If he can’t, then he’s just not good enough.

There are also a few other things that I can easily find here that I wish I couldn’t, things like traffic jam, flood, air pollution, and all sorts of crime. They’re just sitting there waiting to be noticed and talked about with no intention of leaving. Well what can we say.. It is a city that offers everything!

Before I started my 3 month stay, I was so overwhelmed by the second list of items that I was so sure never to live here. However, after 3 months (almost!), I started noticing the fun and challenges I can always find here whenever I need some spices in life. I guess Jakarta is the little New York.. (the little version is good enough for now 🙂 )

Finally saw it! The most talked about movie right now in Indo.. If u live in Indo, I’m sure u know what I’m talking about…. Yup! That’s it, LASKAR PELANGI!!

I’ll be brief.. You can find the review in many other blogs.. 🙂 It’s a great movie, inspiring, touching and very beautiful.. But it’s not that spectacular (in my opinion). Without looking down at the movie itself, I think the great PR factor (media partner, publicity, etc) was one of the things that contribute to the success of this long awaited movie. Personally I think Ayat Ayat Cinta is still the best Indo movie..

Still, congratulations to the crew and cast for producing an astonishing work of art..

the investment bank..

the investment bank..

Since the Lehman Brothers announced their bankruptcy, the newspapers started filling with economic headlines.. and today, as I was doing my monitoring routine, I noticed that every single newspaper had the crisis topic on first page! Even without any economic background, I know that’s not a good sign..

I never learnt about finance or economy, but we had a short course yesterday at IMX on this hot issue. WW explained to us very briefly about the effect that it will have on people, who will get affected the most, and who doesn’t have to worry about it (which leaves almost noone). Koran Tempo today showed a timeline of this crisis. It started in 2006 in the US and has been spreading all across the world ever since. Huge banks suffered losses, stocks slumped, governments had to intervene.

Well the point is, no one can escape the crisis. What we can do, like what our government is hopefully really doing, is get ready. So when it does hit us, we won’t stumble as much as we did in 1997. I remember the US$ rate was at Rp 3.000 before then, and the next day it just flew to higher than Rp 10.000. I don’t know much, but I’m sure that keeping your money at home won’t do any good, we have to keep the circulation of money stable. Act normal, and hopefully normal it will be.

I don’t know what’s goin on now, but I just hope that it won’t be like before..

It’s the end of the holidays, and I’m going to give u some updates (maybe not the latest) on this week’s events.. But before I start, let me say “Minal aidzin wal faidzin” for those who celebrates Idul Fitri.. Better late than never, hehee..

1. GP Singapore was held successfully for the first time last weekend, except for Massa who lost it all in the blink of an eye

2. Valentino Rossi locked his title for MotoGP World Champion, also last weekend, made him the only guy to ever win 8 world champion titles! (didn’t mean to write about racing sports, just happened to be the first 2 things that took place during the hols)

3. McCain showed up for debate, but didn’t get to watch it. Ok, this happened before the race, haha..

4. The vice presidential debate also took place, and Biden did slightly better, according to CNN Report Card

5. Indonesia had THE holidays of the year, which stopped all activities for a whole week

6. And of course, roads, trains, planes and ferries are still crowded because of the arus mudik and arus balik..

AND NOW.. update on my activities during the holz, this is what the title refers to, haha..

1. Farewell with Yuni, my roommate in Jakarta, who had finished her internship period, cu in sby yun..!

2. Spent the weekend in Ancol and Kelapa Gading with my family

3. Went to Bandung, also with my family, and the traffic was very cooperative.. Thank God!

4. Attended WW’s party on the second day of Idul Fitri

5. Met up and had dinner with some old friends, ISBS friends, PLC friends, had some good time with these guys..

6. Slept in almost every morning.. 🙂

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go to the movies.. However, it was a great week compared to my previous expectation and I enjoyed it very much..! Certainly hope u had some great times too..!

Greetings from Gregory!
Greetings from Gregory!

I have less than a week to come up with a description of my minithesis, and I have nothing in mind yet! So yes, my panic mode is starting up.. It’s not on yet, but getting there..

hopefully I don't have to hit this button!

hopefully I won't have to hit this button!

I texted 12 people today asking for their titles and anyone else’s that they know, which shows that I’m in desperate need for inspiration, unfortunately, only one person replied (thanks meli).. It is quite annoying that I have to worry about this during my holidays, but I guess I have no other choice. After all, I want my next few months to be filled with something I love. The fact that I’ll be doing my minithesis during those times means I must find a topic that interests me. A title that I have enough passion in, so that everytime I look at it, it can give me the courage and excitement to keep going, after each tear and failure..

God help me find that precious line..

It’s the last day before we all start our lebaran holidays, at least for us in Indo, hehe..
What have u got in mind? Any interesting ways to spend the whole week while u are not at work or at school?
Most people go mudik to gather with families and friends for Idul Fitri, so they don’t really need a holiday plan. But people who are left behind in big cities, we have the whole week free, and we’re supposed to be able to do things we’ve been longing to do..
Hmm.. can we? Do lebaran holidays really give us the chance to catch up with our favourite activities? Let’s see..

Getaway to ur favourite spot? No, too crowded..
Shopping? The city is half dead, stores mostly closed..
Exercise? Possible and very recommended!
Catch up on sleeping hours? Just don’t waste too much time, catching up doesn’t really work here..
Dance class? Hm.. I don’t know about this one, can anyone help?
Culinary activities? not a bad idea, maybe a bit limited though cause warongs aren’t usually opened during lebaran..

Well, whatever you want to do, just make sure that you have a great time! In the end, everything is nice when your loved ones are around.. Happy holidays everyone!
